First Year Teaching in 2020-2021
I did not expect my first year teaching to be like this!
July 25, 2020
Holy Moly! The 2020-2021 school year is upon us, and in no way was this what I envisioned my first year as a teacher as. Nope. Never would have guessed it. When I decided I wanted to be a teacher, I had this whole big picture in mind. Getting books and things ready for my first classroom. Having some awesome lessons and activities planned for my students. Getting my classroom set up exactly how I wanted it, and looking super cute. Seeing my students walk into a room and see their faces light up.
Yet, here we are. In the middle of a pandemic. I will still have some awesome lessons and activities for students. However, instead of getting to see smiling faces, teachers are going to be looking at masks. I LOVE to smile and spread joy around, and I suppose I will have to squint my eyes extra hard so you can tell I am smiling. As a teacher, you may not even be looking at masks. Maybe, like me, you will be looking at students through a computer screen, and trying to find new ways to build a classroom community in a virtual setting.
I have always loved incorporated technology into learning, but in no way envisioned that learning may be so heavily focused on it. There are always some unknowns, and some things to figure out when becoming a teacher, yet, I feel this year has left more uncertainty of what the year will look like. The one thing I will say… No matter the uncertainties, I am beyond excited to get to make a positive impact on my student’s lives. I am excited to show up, daily, and give teaching my all so my students have the BEST experience. Whether that be in a virtual classroom, or in person while wearing masks.
To any new teacher, or veteran teacher. We are in this together, and together, we can do it!
